An oval halftone portrait of Hermione von Preuschen at about forty, head turned to her right, hair loosely piled, in a pale high-necked dress.

The Portrait She Chose

1893 · Halftone after a photograph

An oval halftone, printed across the gutter at the head of the Litteratur-Beilage of the Allgemeine Kunst-Chronik for December 1893 — directly beside her prose sketch »Château neuf.«, and three columns from a facsimile of her own signature.

This is not a portrait anyone made of her: it is the picture that ran with her work, in the art weekly she was writing for, chosen to introduce a contributor. She is about forty, turned to her right, hair loosely piled, in a pale high-necked dress with something light at the shoulder. The screen is coarse and the ink is grey, so the face arrives softened, almost drawn.

The page credits no photographer and no engraver. Recovered from the Heidelberg digitisation in 2026; as far as we know it has not been reproduced since 1893.
