Flammenmal
Flammenmal (“Fire-Mark” or “Brand”, 1903, Berlin: Verlag Continent / Theo Gutmann) carries a Leonardo da Vinci epigraph — “Sempre lo stesso sarà il mio fuoco…” (“Always the same shall be my fire, always the same shall I be”). It is the clearest proof of her lifelong idea that poem and picture are one thing: the book was illustrated with reproductions of her own paintings, its list of plates naming Lebenshunger, Kirke, Mors imperator, Lebenssphinx, Asrael, and Gloria.
Rilke had already noticed the method in 1896: “in her latest book one can find the text to her great paintings.” The text survives in a Google Books scan of the Harvard copy.
