Noch einmal „Mors Imperator“
When the writer Konrad Telmann — her second husband — died in 1897, Preuschen answered with this elegiac poem-cycle, published the same year by Carl Reissner in Dresden and Leipzig. The title deliberately reprises her scandalous painting Mors Imperator: Death the emperor, now come for the man she called her master in art and life.
It opens:
Zum letzten Mal, nach Deiner Grabesnacht
zieh’n wir vereint hinaus in’s Leben
das Dir nur Kampf und Qual gebracht, —
will nun Dir Ruhm und Friede geben!
