Tollkraut
Tollkraut (“Deadly Nightshade”) gathers ten novellas: Im Grenzland, Gorgo, Hyazinthen, Schmirius, Im Friaul, Ruhm, Zwerge, Truggold, Thalatta, and Capriccio. Published in Leipzig by Carl Reißner in 1893, it is dedicated “Ihrem Meister in Kunst und Leben, Konrad Telmann” (“to her master in art and life”) from Rome, autumn 1893 — a public token of the relationship with the writer she would marry.
The prose is restless and vivid, full of driven, unconventional women; the title (a poisonous plant) sets the tone. The text survives in a clean Google Books scan of the University of California copy.
