Via passionis

Poetry · 1895 · Via passionis: Lebenslieder · Public domain

Via passionis: Lebenslieder (“The Way of the Passion: Life-Songs”, 1895) is a collection of intense, rhythmic verse — the same allegorical, mortality-haunted sensibility that drove her paintings, now in words. Rilke’s 1896 review, which praised how she “paints her poems,” was written of her work in exactly these years.

The original is preserved as a public-domain library scan (196 page images survive); because it is set in an ornate Fraktur type, machine transcription of it is rough, so the page scans remain the most reliable text.
