Yoshiwara

Novel · 1920 · Yoshiwara, vom Freudenhaus des Lebens · Public domain

Yoshiwara, vom Freudenhaus des Lebens (“Yoshiwara, of the Pleasure-House of Life”, 1920) is her late novel, named for Tokyo’s Yoshiwara pleasure district. In three parts — Indra, Shiragiku, and Benares — it follows its heroine Indra Versen out of Berlin and across India, Ceylon, Burma, and Japan, drawing on Preuschen’s own Asian travels. A foreword by Professor Sh. Chiba of Tokyo frames the book.

It is the one work of hers freely available online in full, transcribed from Projekt Gutenberg-DE — and the first we are translating into English. See the translation.
