Then travelling, taking new, great impressions into myself, became the only salvation. How I enjoyed the beauty of the world. I had roamed about Dalmatia and Corfu, had brought many studies home, had almost bought myself a property in Ragusa. The picturesque monastery of San Giorgio, in the rocks close by the sea, I could have had for 400 gulden. I had only one condition to fulfil: to take in every chance case of plague, cholera, smallpox and spotted typhus. At that I preferred to give it up. —

Another time I was in Scotland with Maria Janitschek's companion “Katharina.” It rained mostly, it is true, and still I brought back great impressions of Iona, of Fingal's Cave (the Ossian-dark one), of Edinburgh and Holyrood, of Melrose Abbey and so much else. — Before that I had been in Tirol and with the Scalas, and had really only gone on to Scotland because a millionairess had told me that, having already been to Tirol that summer, she could not possibly go on to Scotland too. That had provoked me. Of course, we now travelled steerage for a change, since I possessed no millions. But as I wore many precious rings, we aroused suspicion and were about to be arrested. Luckily my passport was in the most beautiful order.

Since I was now undertaking my exhibitions in an ever wider radius, after Düsseldorf, Hanover and Paris I had now marked out Vienna as well.
